Nashville singer and songwriter Heidi Burson will perform a benefit concert the the School of American Music scholarship fund on Friday, April 26, at the Acorn Theater in Three Oaks, Mich. Critics have called Burson “a world-class singer, a genuine, rare and unique talent,” and written that her “sultry tone…can silence most any room she is performing in.”
According to Burson, her award-winning soul/R&B sound was inspired by singers such as Aretha Franklin and Etta James. She has toured throughout the U.S., and in the U.K. and Europe, and has produced two albums. Her music is available at most streaming sites, on YouTube at heidibursonmusic and on heidiburson.com. The April concert is Burson’s second performance at the Acorn. She presented her first benefit concert for SAM last May.
Burson says she chose SAM’s scholarship fund as the beneficiary of her Acorn concert “because I believe it’s a bright light in a small community, encouraging creativity for all ages. I keep hearing about school systems cutting their music/arts programs and it breaks my heart. Everything in this world comes from a spark of creativity, and to extinguish those sparks is detrimental.
“We need creators. The world doesn’t work without them. I’ve always said music ihe only language in the world we can all understand, regardless of where we come from. SAM understands this, and I think we should celebrate their efforts.”
More than a third of SAM students receive scholarships, according to President Garth Taylor. “We need scholarship funds because we pay our teachers the going market rate, but not all people who can benefit from music lessons are in a position to pay that amount.”
No stranger to benefit concerts, Burson’s performances have supported AIDS education and outreach, animal rescue and drug and alcohol rehabilitation.
Doors open at 7:00pm on April 26. SAM performers will be on stage at 7:30, and Burson and her band take the stage at 8:00. Tickets are $20, and available online at acornlive.org or at the Acorn box office the day of performance. The Acorn Theater is located at 107 Generation Drive in Three Oaks.
